Kollegala is a small and a border town in in the Chamarajanagara District, Karnataka State very near to the famous Malai Mahadeshwara Hills and about 60 kms from ‘City of Palaces’ Mysuru. Though it is a small town, it is acclaimed as a centre for cocoon market and silk reeling. Major crops of the taluk are sugarcane, cotton, coconut, mulberry, paddy and different types of vegetables. More than 80% of the people are farmers and the remaining percentage of the population involves itself in petty trading, cottage and small scale industries and service sector. The literacy rate of the town and the nearby villages is 40% for male and 22% for female. It has been a challenging and an uphill task to provide the right environment and training facilities for the girl students from such a rural background. This challenge has been converted into an opportunity by the JSS Mahavidhyapeetha.JSS College for Women, Kollegala was established in 1983. The College is affiliated to the University of Mysore, Mysuru and has been recognized under section 2 (f) and 12 (B) by University Grant Commission. It is one of the four degree colleges in the town, the other three being a Government First Grade College and two unaided private institutions. The College has been in the forefront of various endeavors to change the education scenario in this town, especially in the field of empowerment of women by imparting quality education. Though rather young in age, it has proved itself to be a centre for excellence and an instrument in higher education and socio-economic and cultural change. Started in a small building with an initial strength of 23 students and 5 teachers, the college moved into 3.39 acres of land, the campus surrounded by greenery and designed to suit the modern higher education Institution in the heart of the town in 1983. At present strength of the college increasing 700, of which nearly fifty percent belong to SC and ST running programmes of BA, B.Com, BBM and Post Graduation in Master of Commerce (MCOM).Higher education to women is incomplete without a hostel facility more so in the rural areas. Kollegala being a border taluk and many students coming from remote parts of hilly areas there was urgent need of a girl’s hostel in the campus. It was fulfilled by the JSS MVP with UGC grants of Rs. 80 lakhs and its own funds of Rs. 70 lakhs with a multy storied hostel building for a accommodation of more than 200 students. The hostel is fully equipped with modern kitchen, dining hall, prayer hall and reading room.
